4Essential Luther 2nd Edition  Sep 27, 2008
By Michael Kerner "Michael Kerner"
These past few years, there have been so many different greatest hits collections from Luther Vandross. While it is confusing for anyone who hasn't even yet heard any of his soulful gems, many just be a bit torn. There have been those that really delivered on his soul beginning to end, like 2006's Ultimate Luther Vandross and the simplicity of the cover song, like the 1998 Always & Forever: The Classics collection of his best cover songs. While it has been so sad that it has been over 3 years since he sadly died after embattling a serious stroke, his music will definitely live on. Now, one of his previous collection has been expanded to a new level of voice.

The Essential Luther Vandross 3.0, expands the soulful 2003 collection of Luther Vandross's best music from his Sony days from the 80's and 90's. The collection includes a lot of his best songs, and add on a few extras, for hard core fans, but not that much. You still have the same tracks as before like the classic duets like Endless Love with Mariah Carey, How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye with Dionne Warwick, and his classic solo songs from somber ballads like Here & Now, the elequent Any Love, and overlooked gems like Don't Want To Be A Fool, If This World Were Mine. The extra disc doesn't add much, but brings in a bit of heart on some of other greats including Dance With My Father, and Crazy Love. Sadly, with so many different hits collection of Luther's catalog released over this past decade alone, I honestly was a bit dissapointed that several of Luther's big songs from his 2001 self-titled record and Dance With My Father were ignored like Take You Out, I'd Rather, his duet with Beyonce' on The Closer I Get To You, and Buy Me A Rose weren't highlighted.

While there really isn't much that was expanded on with The Essential Luther Vandross 3.0, to compete with other reflections like 2007's boxed set, Love, Luther, it still is a solid buy for anyone who doesn't own a Luther Vandross record yet. It still is so sad that Luther is gone. His voice will still continue to be eternally missed. We still didn't want to be fools losing him, but there will never be a sophisticated voice in R&B like the one he had.

5great set  Apr 12, 2009
By A customer "mistermaxxx"
miss Lutha big time. he was so soulful and he left such a huge pressence and Brother Man had range for day. his voice is timeless and the way he Sung/Sang let it be known he was on the real. this is a good start for a Luther Newbie. you can hear his versaility and the way his powerful instrument was used and how strong it was and how it is truly missed. He was something else.
